An Article About Homeschooling

I found an interesting article about homeschooling that is well worth your read. Here is the article:
Homeschooling: A Breeding Ground For Conservative Ideology
I have been homeschooling for so long that I thought that I had heard every argument against homeschooling. I confess that I was wrong. This quote made me laugh out loud:

Homeschooling is a true vocation and parents devote all the means necessary to it, even if it means tightening their belts. State schools have been financially sacrificed for decades in the US, especially under Republican administrations.

I can actually imagine one stomping their foot at the injustice that a homeschooler can tighten their belts, and devote more time to the homeschool child than the public school can. Do you know what vocation means?

According to the online dictionary vocation means this:
1. a particular occupation, business, or profession, calling
2. a strong impulse or inclination to follow a particular activity or career.
3. a Divine call to God's service or to the Christian life.
4. a function or station in life which one is called by God.

Teaching is a vocation. Instead of whining for more money, perhaps the children of the nation would be better served by the example set by the homeschool families. Instead of trying to determine what can be taken from the homeschool example a barb is tossed towards Republicans. This is a sad state of affairs that the article while correctly listing that homeschoolers are often times more prepared for college, we can only take the negativity towards homeschooling.

Take the title. If you are a conservative and your children are in public school, you are being told volumes. Public schools are liberal breeding grounds. So no matter what you try and instill in your child, the public schools have more time to subject your children to an ideology that you disagree with.

Another interesting point of the article is that homeschool parents are often untrained to educate their children, yet the movement is successful and children are learning. Do you understand the implications of this?

Of course I am not trying to change your minds on whether you should homeschool or not. But if public school failure is the blame of Republicans then what are you political beliefs? As a conservative are you willing to stand idly by and allow the blame to be placed on Republicans?

Just as the stimulus package will prove, dumping more money into anything rarely attains results unless the goal is firm and not wavering. Public schools no longer focus on the basics, but every political wind blowing its way. The curricula is outdated before it hits the classroom, and the bias is obvious in the textbooks. Ponder the texts that had several pages devoted to a man that had not even been elected president. Consider the revisionist textbooks-the liberal agenda of tearing down the walls of family.

By the way it is my vocation to

“Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it" (Prov 22:6).

Hi! We don't know one another, but I swiped your link from your comment on our "Aunt Mama Hen's" blog (Wendy). I am her niece, and I enjoyed your writing on homeschooling! We will be homeschooling our daughter next year - the big kindergarten!- And we are so excited about it!

I just wanted to add, that whomever wrote that article evidently hasn't done too much homework, because I have been shocked in my research at how many people are looking for curriculum "without religious slant" to it. It's not just us crazy conservatives!

Miss Jennifer-I am happy that you will be homeschooling. There are tremendous resources that have no slant what so ever. I suggest that for the first couple years you question everyone, and wait to buy a curriculum. My early mistake was buying a curriculum to be like the public schools.

I have found that a collection of works has worked for us. For 2 of the kids I used Saxon Math as they were big readers and this was easy for them. Most of the history text I use are quite old, as I wish history to be what it was and not revised.(we actually study current history on line.)

Reading is easy as your public library is at hand. Spelling is also available at the Library. Every library we have ever been to has much available to utilize...

I use Wanda Phillips for grammar.
Don't forget that your state has many many places to visit that will increase learning and incorporate study in a place aside from home.

The HSLD is also a place that is there to defend your right to home school. Inquire at your local public school about a homeschool group and connect as this is a great way to connect with veteran homeschoolers and a place to interact. We have over 200 children in our group and have an organized PE day twice a week.

Well long winded I was-forgive me. If you wish to email me my email is penofjen(at)yahoo(dot) com.

Very important topic. Homeschooling will likely become a big target in the next few years. Thanks for the link to the article. I will be posting it on my blog.

Rightklik-I am glad that you are going to link to the article. We must bring awareness to what the agenda is in our public schools.

Thanks for your positive blog on homeschooling... I homeschooled my three girls up until this year (the oldest for 5 yrs)... but this yr I have my two oldest in public school... (why? - I still feel homeschooling is best - but was feeling too overwhelmed & exhausted, burnt out and needing a tiny break) so I'm only homeschooing the youngest this year - I'll probably be homeschooling all again next year.
It's been a interesting year for me to see both sides of the spectrum. I see the positive & negative aspects of each.
It's funny I still get the worried and concerned parents that advice me that I shouldn't homeschool anymore because my kids will be "socially inept." That is such a joke, as there are so many outreach homeschooling groups and such. There are probably over 1000 negative myths about homeschooling - that need to be cleared up.
There is also so much wonderful homeschooling curriculum out there.
The one thing I do know from experience; it does take a lot of devotion, time, & commitment -so Kudos to all the homeschooling parents who sacrifice and do this wonderful thing for their children.
